SUMMARY:Free Trees For CLE
DESCRIPTION:100 FREE native trees for Cleveland residents!\nDoan Brook Watershed Partnership (DBWP) has 100 native trees to give away to Cleveland residents.  \nCleveland residents are eligible for two free trees and must plant the trees on Cleveland private property. Additionally\, all recipients are required to attend “Tree School 101\,” a 15-minute presentation on caring for and maintaining trees. Several species are available\, including Red Maple\, Ohio Buckeye\, Eastern Redbud\, American plum\, and Pawpaw. Requests for specific species of trees for your yard are unavailable due to unknown species availability. Most trees will be between three and six feet in height in three to five-gallon buckets. \nInterested individuals must fill out a form before receiving their trees.  \nThis event will be held in the rear parking lot of the Fairhill Partners Campus. Check the map below with specific event locations and traffic flow. \nDirections for community members to follow to reach the DBWP live stakes drive through events. \nAbout our Free Tree Program!\nDBWP received a grant from the Cleveland Tree Coalition to provide trees at no cost to Cleveland residents to increase planting on private property\, build sentiment around trees\, and build community trust. Approximately 30% of the Doan Brook Watershed is covered by tree canopy. When sub-dividing the watershed into smaller neighborhood units tree canopy’s cover as low as 4% of these areas! Help us  increase our tree canopy to encourage resiliency across Cleveland. \nFor more information\, visit our Tree Programs page. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Doan Brook Volunteer Training & Water Quality Demonstration at Lower Lake
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning more about the water that flows through your neighborhood? Join us on one of two dates to explore how you can become a local watershed steward for the Doan Brook through becoming a water quality monitoring volunteer! \n\nSaturday\, May 2nd\, 2026\, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm: Lower Lake\, Shaker Heights\nTuesday\, May 5th\, 2026\, from 4:30 – 5:30 pm: Sowinski Park\, St Casimir Way\, Cleveland\, OH 44108 \n\nPlease bring closed-toed shoes appropriate for outside activities. The area we will hold this event is accessible to wheelchairs and ~50 feet away from the primary parking. \nOur Volunteer Program\nThe Doan Brook Watershed Partnership is partnered with the Cleveland Water Alliance and Lake Erie Volunteer Science Network to collect water quality data at 17 sites across the watershed (Watershed Sampling Map). Our sampling is conducted once a month at each site between April and October. Sampling at a site usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes\, and volunteers are free to choose as many or few sites as they have capacity for. All required equipment for sampling can be checked out from our office or the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. To ensure all of our volunteers have equal access to the necessary equipment\, we ask that volunteers who check out equipment return it within a maximum of 48 hours (Or when the host site is next open. \nConducting water quality monitoring as a volunteer requires minimal skill or knowledge. This Training is for new (and returning) volunteers to teach them everything they need to know about their site(s)\, how to operate the equipment\, and what else is expected of them. Ideally\, a Water Quality Monitoring Volunteer would collect samples at their site(s) every month; however\, we understand that life happens\, so when something unexpected comes up\, just reach out and let us know. Aside from that\, all we ask of our volunteers is that they are confident in their ability to navigate the required terrain to reach their site(s) safely. \nFor more information on our Water Quality Monitoring Program check out our Programs page or click this link.

SUMMARY:Nine Mile Gorge Escarpment Ravine Hike with Dr. Roy Larick
DESCRIPTION:About the Hike\nThe Nine Mile gorge is the ambitious ‘hike of hikes’ for the East Side escarpment. It will run for two hours in unimproved rugged terrain. Safety is paramount. The gorge entry and exit involves a very steep slope across a 60-ft elevation change. This hike requires hikers to be comfortable navigating steep\, slippery and at times uneven surfaces. \nDuring the Hike\, Dr. Roy Larick will share information about the ecology and natural history of the area\, so come prepared to learn! \nNine Mile Gorge\nShale gorges punctuate Cleveland’s East Side Portage Escarpment. All have walls too steep for traditional development. The larger gorges\, on Doan\, Dugway and Euclid creeks\, hold public parks. The smaller ravines are barely touched by humans. Nine Mile is the largest of the latter. \nOnce at stream level\, this special hike will cover 30 acres of gorge floodplain under an open second growth forest. Nine Mile’s surprising anticline pools are unique habitat features. Conservation issues include entrenched channels\, scoured aquatic habitat\, biological and chemical pollution\, and severe deer-browsing. \nWhat to Bring\nSturdy hiking shoes are best for the approach slope. However\, we will cross the creek several times with potential for overtopping low shoes. Waterproof knee-highs will keep you dry in the stream\, but are not the best for the approach. If you don’t wear at least calf-highs\, you’re likely to get wet feet\, so an extra change of socks for the ride home might be a good idea. \nWhere to Meet\nThe South Euclid Police request that we park at Quarry Park North\, 669 S Belvoir Blvd\, South Euclid 44121. We will gather there at 10:45\, and walk 850 ft north along Belvoir to the gorge entry point on Princeton. We want to begin the gorge descent promptly at 11:00. \nRegistration\nPre-registration is required as the number of people we can accommodate is limited. Attendance is free\, however donations are always welcome! \nKnow your Ability\nThis hike requires walking over steep\, uneven terrain. Surfaces may be muddy or slippery\, and hikers may get their feet wet. Hikers who are not comfortable with these conditions may be better suited for a different DBWP hike or program.

SUMMARY:Take to the Lake
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date: Saturday\, August 22nd 10am – 4pm\nTake to the Lake\nDoan Brook Watershed Partnership has been hosting our annual event Take to the Lake which was started in 2013 as a memorial to Lester Stumpe\, an avid paddler and early DBWP board member. We typically host the event on the last Saturday in August and this years event details can be found below. Canoeing on the Shaker Lakes was a popular pastime in the first half of the 20th century\, but public boating on the lakes is now less common. Take to the Lake gives participants a chance to resurrect this recreational opportunity for a day\, and gain a new perspective on the lakes and their place in our watershed community. We hope you will join us for an afternoon of paddling\, guided hikes\, yoga\, along the banks of historic Lower Shaker Lake. \nEvent Details\nWhere: Lower Shaker Lake\, Brook Rd. Shaker Heights \nWhen: Saturday\, August 22nd 10am-4pm \nParking: Please park along South Park Blvd and walk over to registration along South Park and Brook Rd.

\nAbout our Free Tree Program!\nDBWP received a $10\,000 grant from the Cleveland Tree Coalition to provide trees at no cost to Cleveland residents to increase planting on private property\, build sentiment around trees\, and build community trust. \n  \n
