SUMMARY:Doan Brook Volunteer Training & Water Quality Demonstration at Lower Lake
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning more about the water that flows through your neighborhood? Join us on one of two dates to explore how you can become a local watershed steward for the Doan Brook through becoming a water quality monitoring volunteer! \n\nSaturday\, May 2nd\, 2026\, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm: Lower Lake\, Shaker Heights\nTuesday\, May 5th\, 2026\, from 4:30 – 5:30 pm: Sowinski Park\, St Casimir Way\, Cleveland\, OH 44108 \n\nPlease bring closed-toed shoes appropriate for outside activities. The area we will hold this event is accessible to wheelchairs and ~50 feet away from the primary parking. \nOur Volunteer Program\nThe Doan Brook Watershed Partnership is partnered with the Cleveland Water Alliance and Lake Erie Volunteer Science Network to collect water quality data at 17 sites across the watershed (Watershed Sampling Map). Our sampling is conducted once a month at each site between April and October. Sampling at a site usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes\, and volunteers are free to choose as many or few sites as they have capacity for. All required equipment for sampling can be checked out from our office or the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. To ensure all of our volunteers have equal access to the necessary equipment\, we ask that volunteers who check out equipment return it within a maximum of 48 hours (Or when the host site is next open. \nConducting water quality monitoring as a volunteer requires minimal skill or knowledge. This Training is for new (and returning) volunteers to teach them everything they need to know about their site(s)\, how to operate the equipment\, and what else is expected of them. Ideally\, a Water Quality Monitoring Volunteer would collect samples at their site(s) every month; however\, we understand that life happens\, so when something unexpected comes up\, just reach out and let us know. Aside from that\, all we ask of our volunteers is that they are confident in their ability to navigate the required terrain to reach their site(s) safely. \nFor more information on our Water Quality Monitoring Program check out our Programs page or click this link.

SUMMARY:Nine Mile Gorge Escarpment Ravine Hike with Dr. Roy Larick
DESCRIPTION:About the Hike\nThe Nine Mile gorge is the ambitious ‘hike of hikes’ for the East Side escarpment. It will run for two hours in unimproved rugged terrain. Safety is paramount. The gorge entry and exit involves a very steep slope across a 60-ft elevation change. This hike requires hikers to be comfortable navigating steep\, slippery and at times uneven surfaces. \nDuring the Hike\, Dr. Roy Larick will share information about the ecology and natural history of the area\, so come prepared to learn! \nNine Mile Gorge\nShale gorges punctuate Cleveland’s East Side Portage Escarpment. All have walls too steep for traditional development. The larger gorges\, on Doan\, Dugway and Euclid creeks\, hold public parks. The smaller ravines are barely touched by humans. Nine Mile is the largest of the latter. \nOnce at stream level\, this special hike will cover 30 acres of gorge floodplain under an open second growth forest. Nine Mile’s surprising anticline pools are unique habitat features. Conservation issues include entrenched channels\, scoured aquatic habitat\, biological and chemical pollution\, and severe deer-browsing. \nWhat to Bring\nSturdy hiking shoes are best for the approach slope. However\, we will cross the creek several times with potential for overtopping low shoes. Waterproof knee-highs will keep you dry in the stream\, but are not the best for the approach. If you don’t wear at least calf-highs\, you’re likely to get wet feet\, so an extra change of socks for the ride home might be a good idea. \nWhere to Meet\nThe South Euclid Police request that we park at Quarry Park North\, 669 S Belvoir Blvd\, South Euclid 44121. We will gather there at 10:45\, and walk 850 ft north along Belvoir to the gorge entry point on Princeton. We want to begin the gorge descent promptly at 11:00. \nRegistration\nPre-registration is required as the number of people we can accommodate is limited. Attendance is free\, however donations are always welcome! \nKnow your Ability\nThis hike requires walking over steep\, uneven terrain. Surfaces may be muddy or slippery\, and hikers may get their feet wet. Hikers who are not comfortable with these conditions may be better suited for a different DBWP hike or program.

Filled with meandering trails and multiple waterfalls\, the Doan Brook Gorge is a beautiful and often under-utilized natural area of the Doan Brook watershed. \nThis year\, we are hosting 6 “Habitat Stewardship Days” which will involve invasive species removal\, native tree plantings\, and so much more! Join us in helping to make the Doan Brook Gorge a more biodiverse and welcoming outdoor space for all! \nGeneral\nWhat to bring: Volunteers of all experience levels are welcome. We will have limited gloves and hand tools available\, but if you have your own garden tools\, please feel free to bring those along! Please wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing that you do not mind getting a little dirty\, and consider bringing water and/or snacks for your comfort! \nParking: Volunteers can park on E. 127th or at the Fairhill Partners building Parking Lot on 12200 Fairhill Rd.  and walk to the work site on Fairhill Road between E 124th and E. 127th.
