SUMMARY:Live Stakes Drive Through
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 2026 spring live stake drive-through and demonstration!\n  \nCalling all Watershed residents! You are invited to stop by the Fairhill Partners campus to pick up some FREE live stakes along with a short demonstration about how to use them. This event will be held in the rear parking lot. Please follow the arrows on the map below to navigate to our events space. \nDirections for community members to follow to reach the DBWP live stakes drive through events. \nAt this event\, we will have the following species of live stakes to select from! \n\nSilky Dogwood\nRed Osier Dogwood\nSilky Willow\nArrowwood\nButtonbush\nElderberry\n\nAbout our live stakes program\nOver the next five years\, DBWP plans to assess all accessible and appropriate sites along the 10 miles of lineal stream that make up the Doan Brook for the feasibility of native live stakes installation. Each year\, 2 miles of streambank will be assessed and categorized into one of three groups: “ready for live stakes” for locations that meet all requirements; “needs some attention” for areas requiring invasive removal or other preparatory work; and “live staking not possible” for sites that are unsuitable due to accessibility constraints or other limiting factors. \nIn 2025\, DBWP Staff and volunteers collaborated to install over 1200 live stakes!\nSpecies installed included silky dogwood\, red osier dogwood\, silky willow\, arrowwood\, buttonbush\, ninebark\, nannyberry\, & elderberry. \nTo learn more about our program and live stakes Click Here!

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Nine Mile Gorge Escarpment Ravine Hike with Dr. Roy Larick
DESCRIPTION:This hike has been cancelled due to inclement weather. We are looking to reschedule in February or March. \nAbout the Hike\nThe Nine Mile gorge is the ambitious ‘hike of hikes’ for the East Side escarpment. It will run for two hours in unimproved rugged terrain. Safety is paramount. The gorge entry and exit involves a very steep slope across a 60-ft elevation change. This hike requires hikers to be comfortable navigating steep\, slippery and at times uneven surfaces. \nDuring the Hike\, Dr. Roy Larick will share information about the ecology and natural history of the area\, so come prepared to learn! \nNine Mile Gorge\nShale gorges punctuate Cleveland’s East Side Portage Escarpment. All have walls too steep for traditional development. The larger gorges\, on Doan\, Dugway and Euclid creeks\, hold public parks. The smaller ravines are barely touched by humans. Nine Mile is the largest of the latter. \nOnce at stream level\, this special hike will cover 30 acres of gorge floodplain under an open second growth forest. Nine Mile’s surprising anticline pools are unique habitat features. Conservation issues include entrenched channels\, scoured aquatic habitat\, biological and chemical pollution\, and severe deer-browsing. \nWhat to Bring\nSturdy hiking shoes are best for the approach slope. However\, we will cross the creek several times with potential for overtopping low shoes. Waterproof knee-highs will keep you dry in the stream\, but are not the best for the approach. If you don’t wear at least calf-highs\, you’re likely to get wet feet\, so an extra change of socks for the ride home might be a good idea. \nWhere to Meet\nThe South Euclid Police request that we park at Quarry Park North\, 669 S Belvoir Blvd\, South Euclid 44121. We will gather there at 10:45\, and walk 850 ft north along Belvoir to the gorge entry point on Princeton. We want to begin the gorge descent promptly at 11:00. \nRegistration\nPre-registration is required as the number of people we can accommodate is limited. Attendance is free\, however donations are always welcome!

SUMMARY:Friends of Doan Brook Gorge Habitat Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Doan Brook Gorge\nA few years ago\, some friends got together to start removing invasive species and planting native species in the Doan Brook Gorge in the hopes of making it a more resilient and accessible spot for community members to spend time in nature. Filled with meandering trails and multiple waterfalls\, the Doan Brook Gorge is a beautiful and often under-utilized natural area of the Doan Brook watershed. \nThis year\, we are hosting 6 “Habitat Stewardship Days” which will involve invasive species removal\, native tree plantings\, and so much more! Join us in helping to make the Doan Brook Gorge a more biodiverse and welcoming outdoor space for all! \nWhat to bring: Volunteers of all experience levels are welcome. We will have limited gloves and hand tools available\, but if you have your own garden tools\, please feel free to bring those along! Please wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing that you do not mind getting a little dirty\, and consider bringing water and/or snacks for your comfort! \nParking: Volunteers can park in the Fairhill Partners parking lot — or on E. 124 — and walk to the work site on Fairhill Road between E 124th and E. 127th. \nRegistration: Advance registration is requested but walk-ups are welcomed. Register Here! For questions\, please contact Emily at Emily@dbwp.org

SUMMARY:Grow Not Mow
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Public Lands Day with us!\nThe workday celebrating National Public Lands Day will again be a collaborative event sponsored by the City of Shaker Heights\, The Doan Brook Watershed Partnership and the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. \n\nWe are calling for volunteers of all ages to join us in planting more native trees and plants and removing invasives at this site adjacent to the Doan Brook. This is our third season of extending this area of woodland and underplanting it with a meadow. A planned NEORSD project will remove a concrete stepped culverted area of the Doan Brook impeding fish passage. This will enable Nature Center Natural Resource Specialists and volunteers to remove invasive vines proliferating along the banks of the Doan Brook. \nAll volunteers should come dressed for the weather. Tools and gloves will be provided. Families and volunteers of all ages are welcome! \n\nRegistration\nPre-registration has closed so that we can prepare for the event. Walk ups are still welcome! If you missed the chance to pre-register\, we would still love for you to stop by! \nAbout Grow Not Mow\n \nGrow Not Mow is a community program powered by volunteers like you and championed by the City of Shaker Heights. With this program\, we hope to restore and enhance biodiversity in the floodplain of the Doan Brook to make it a better habitat for pollinators\, wildlife\, and people while also reducing the land area that is mowed. Our plantings will also help to absorb\, filter stormwater runoff and prevent soil erosion\, and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with mowing.
