Filled with meandering trails and multiple waterfalls\, the Doan Brook Gorge is a beautiful and often under-utilized natural area of the Doan Brook watershed. \nThis year\, we are hosting 6 “Habitat Stewardship Days” which will involve invasive species removal\, native tree plantings\, and so much more! Join us in helping to make the Doan Brook Gorge a more biodiverse and welcoming outdoor space for all! \nGeneral\nWhat to bring: Volunteers of all experience levels are welcome. We will have limited gloves and hand tools available\, but if you have your own garden tools\, please feel free to bring those along! Please wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing that you do not mind getting a little dirty\, and consider bringing water and/or snacks for your comfort! \nParking: Volunteers can park on E. 127th or at the Fairhill Partners building Parking Lot on 12200 Fairhill Rd.  and walk to the work site on Fairhill Road between E 124th and E. 127th.

SUMMARY:Doan Brook Volunteer Training & Water Quality Demonstration at Lower Lake
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning more about the water that flows through your neighborhood? Join us on one of two dates to explore how you can become a local watershed steward for the Doan Brook through becoming a water quality monitoring volunteer! \n\nSaturday\, May 2nd\, 2026\, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm: Lower Lake\, Shaker Heights\nTuesday\, May 5th\, 2026\, from 4:30 – 5:30 pm: Sowinski Park\, St Casimir Way\, Cleveland\, OH 44108 \n\nPlease bring closed-toed shoes appropriate for outside activities. The area we will hold this event is accessible to wheelchairs and ~50 feet away from the primary parking. \nEvent Details\n5/2/2026 \nThank you for your interest in the Doan Brook Volunteer Training & Water Quality Demonstration at Lower Lake! We will be meeting at the Shaker Mulch Pile at Lower Shaker Lake at 11:00 am tomorrow! See the photo below for an aerial image of the meeting location. \nthere are no public restrooms available on site\, so please plan accordingly. \nIt looks like it will be a bit chilly\, but otherwise nice weather\, so please come dressed appropriately\, and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. \nThank you so much for your interest. We look forward to seeing you! \n \nOur Volunteer Program\nThe Doan Brook Watershed Partnership is partnered with the Cleveland Water Alliance and Lake Erie Volunteer Science Network to collect water quality data at 17 sites across the watershed (Watershed Sampling Map). Our sampling is conducted once a month at each site between April and October. Sampling at a site usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes\, and volunteers are free to choose as many or few sites as they have capacity for. All required equipment for sampling can be checked out from our office or the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. To ensure all of our volunteers have equal access to the necessary equipment\, we ask that volunteers who check out equipment return it within a maximum of 48 hours (Or when the host site is next open. \nConducting water quality monitoring as a volunteer requires minimal skill or knowledge. This Training is for new (and returning) volunteers to teach them everything they need to know about their site(s)\, how to operate the equipment\, and what else is expected of them. Ideally\, a Water Quality Monitoring Volunteer would collect samples at their site(s) every month; however\, we understand that life happens\, so when something unexpected comes up\, just reach out and let us know. Aside from that\, all we ask of our volunteers is that they are confident in their ability to navigate the required terrain to reach their site(s) safely. \nFor more information on our Water Quality Monitoring Program check out our Programs page or click this link.

SUMMARY:Grow Not Mow
DESCRIPTION:We are calling for volunteers of all ages to join us in planting more native trees and plants and removing invasives at this site adjacent to the Doan Brook. \nWe will be planting 15-21 native species of trees and many native plants. \nAll volunteers should come dressed for the weather. Tools and gloves will be provided\, but if you have a favorite shovel\, please feel free to bring it along! Families and volunteers of all ages are welcome! \nAbout Grow Not Mow\nGrow Not Mow is a community program powered by volunteers like you and championed by the City of Shaker Heights. With this program\, we hope to restore and enhance biodiversity in the floodplain of the Doan Brook to make it a better habitat for pollinators\, wildlife\, and people while also reducing the land area that is mowed. Our plantings will also help to absorb\, filter stormwater runoff and prevent soil erosion\, and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with mowing.

SUMMARY:Grow Not Mow
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Public Lands Day with us!\nThe workday celebrating National Public Lands Day will again be a collaborative event sponsored by the City of Shaker Heights\, The Doan Brook Watershed Partnership and the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. \n\nWe are calling for volunteers of all ages to join us in planting more native trees and plants and removing invasives at this site adjacent to the Doan Brook. This is our third season of extending this area of woodland and underplanting it with a meadow. A planned NEORSD project will remove a concrete stepped culverted area of the Doan Brook impeding fish passage. This will enable Nature Center Natural Resource Specialists and volunteers to remove invasive vines proliferating along the banks of the Doan Brook. \nAll volunteers should come dressed for the weather. Tools and gloves will be provided. Families and volunteers of all ages are welcome! \n\nRegistration\nPre-registration has closed so that we can prepare for the event. Walk ups are still welcome! If you missed the chance to pre-register\, we would still love for you to stop by! \nAbout Grow Not Mow\n \nGrow Not Mow is a community program powered by volunteers like you and championed by the City of Shaker Heights. With this program\, we hope to restore and enhance biodiversity in the floodplain of the Doan Brook to make it a better habitat for pollinators\, wildlife\, and people while also reducing the land area that is mowed.
